Helga 'Tears of blood.'

Helga 'Tears of blood' is the first book in a series that follows the life of a young Pict Girl (Eithne), who is left traumatised after viking raiders, led by Jarl Heggalund, rape and murder her mother and destroy her village on a small island near Orkney.

Rescued by Harald Harfagre and his crew, she is taken to Norway and adopted by Harald and his wife Åsa.

She is expected to learn the ways of a viking woman but rebels against it, and with the help of her warrior friend Erik, she learns to fight with sword and shield. When Erik is seriously wounded protecting Helga from a group of men, he is taken by Harald to the witch Groa in an attempt to save his life.

Helga ravaged by guilt for leaving her friend to fight alone, persuades Cinead to take her to the witch, fearful that Erik may die.

He reluctantly agrees and their journey begins.
